§ Mr. Croninasked the Minister of Aviation what consideration he is giving to the use of arrester gear in airports to stop large jet aircraft from overrunning runways in emergencies, having regard to the recent tests made by the Federal Aviation Agency at the Lakehurst Naval Air Test Faculty, New Jersey, details of which have been sent to him.
§ Mr. ThorneycroftExperience of large civil jet aircraft does not suggest a need for arrester gear in their operation. The performance requirements for take-off and landing are designed to secure an adequate safety margin. I am, however, keeping in touch with developments of arrester gear, including the recent Federal Aviation Agency tests.
