§ 87. Mr. R. Edwardsasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs whether he is aware of the difficulties that have arisen in connection with the shortage of materials and labour for the purpose of slum clearance and local council house building; and whether he will reintroduce some method of control which would allow for the freeing of materials and labour for essential building purposes.
Dr. HillI am well aware that the building industry generally has been under heavy pressure recently and that this has led to difficulties, in particular a shortage of skilled labour. The Government have already taken steps to reduce the excessive demands on the industry.
