§ Mr. Emeryasked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what steps are being taken to deal with tuberculosis in Basutoland.
§ Mr. SandysThe Basutoland Government have accepted a generous offer from the World Health Organisation and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund of expert personnel and equipment, at a cost of about £100,000, for a tuberculosis control programme. The Basutoland Government, who will be responsible for operating the scheme, will contribute £40,000.
The immediate objective is a pilot scheme involving about 30,000 people in the lowlands, to study and develop effective methods of control which would be suitable for extension to the rest of the country.
