HC Deb 17 November 1961 vol 649 cc89-90W
Mrs. Hart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will convene a conference of local authorities in areas affected by proposed pit closures to consider what steps can be taken to meet the urgent human and social problems arising in their areas.

Mr. Maclay

The National Coal Board has indicated that alternative work will be available within travelling distance of their homes for the great majority of the men affected. I do not think that a conference such as the hon. Lady suggests would be a suitable way of dealing with any residual local problems.
