HC Deb 02 November 1961 vol 648 c9W
Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland for how long Miss Pat Arrowsmith has been in solitary confinement; and when it will be ended.

Mr. Maclay

From 6th to 9th October Miss Arrowsmith was confined to her cell as a punishment for refusing to work. On 10th October she was removed from association as authorised by Rule 36 of the Prison (Scotland) Rules, because she persisted in trying to persuade other prisoners not to work. I should not be prepared to authorise Miss Arrowsmith's return to normal circulation until she undertakes not to try to persuade other prisoners not to work.
