§ Mr. Masonasked the Secretary of State for War if he will explain the system by which British Service men are allocated accommodation in hotels and private accommodation; what rent allowance they receive; and what is the average rent charged in hotels and private accommodation, respectively.
§ Mr. RamsdenI understand that the hon. Gentleman has B.A.O.R. in mind. Accommodation in hotels and private accommodation is not allotted to married Service men, though they are allowed to occupy it under their own arrangements, and are assisted with the cost. Accommodation must satisfy certain standards, and be certified as suitable by the applicant's commanding officer.
Service men living with their families in private accommodation in B.A.O.R. are paid from 2s. 9d. to 3s. 9d. a day according to rank, in addition to normal rates of local overseas allowance.
In B.A.O.R. Service men living with their families in hotels receive in lieu of normal rates of local overseas allowance a special rate of£1 10s. a day (officers) or£1 5s. a day (other ranks).
84WThe average inclusive charge in German hotels is£7 to£9 per adult a week, and the average weekly rent for private accommodation is£3 to£5.
