asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will announce the name of the chairman, and the composition and terms of reference, of the Joint Study Group to undertake ways and means of securing improvement in employment in Northern Ireland.

I am glad to be able to announce that Sir Herbert Brittain has accepted an invitation to be the Chairman of the Joint Study Group consisting of senior officials of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland Departments concerned.

The terms of reference are: To examine and report on the economic situation of Northern Ireland, the factors causing the persistent problem of high unemployment, and what measures can be taken to bring about a lasting improvement.
