HC Deb 02 May 1961 vol 639 cc103-4W
Mr. H. Wilson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state for the financial years 1938–39 and 1960–61 the total yield of Income Tax, excluding Surtax, and the total yield from National Insurance and National Health Service stamp contributions; and if he will state the estimated figures under these heads for the financial year 1961–62.

Sir E. Boyle

The information required is set out in the following table:

£ million
Income Tax excluding Surtax National Insurance and National Health Service stamp contributions
1938–39 336 108 (1)
1960–61 2,433 832 (estimated)
1961–62 2,728½ (estimated) 1,084 (estimated) (2)
(1) This figure is not directly comparable with the later figures because the pre-war insurance schemes were more restricted in scope.
(2) This figure includes the estimated yield of £165 million from graduated National Insurance contributions collected by P.A.Y.E.
