§ 63. Mr. Hockingasked the Postmaster General what progress has been made with the provision of the new direct cable between the United Kingdom and the United States of America which was the subject of an agreement laid before the House last July.
§ Mr. BevinsOrders have been placed for the cable to be manufactured in this country and the repeaters in the United States. Everything points to a successful completion of the project in 1963. It is now expected that the United Kingdom share of the cost will be about £8 million, instead of the £6 million forecast last July. However, the rapidly increasing traffic will ensure that this cable will not only meet a very real need, but will also give a good return on the investment.
