§ 65. Mr. Mellishasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the need to ensure strict compliance with parking meter regulations, he will state his policy with regard to future employment of traffic wardens.
§ Mr. RentonThe power to appoint traffic wardens rests with the Commissioner of Police in the Metropolitan Police District and elsewhere with the police authority. The Commissioner is satisfied that the employment of traffic wardens is making an effective contribution to the free flow of traffic in central London, but it must be regarded as still in the experimental stage and its extension must be a gradual matter.
