§ Mr. G. M. Thomsonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies in respect of each of the Colonial Territories in Africa whether the purchase of textbooks for Government schools is made through the Crown Agents; and where this is not so, what alternative arrangements are made.

Kenya
Almost invariably textbooks published in the United Kingdom are purchased through the Crown Agents. 80W mind, but I hope that the following figures which are taken from the National Income and Expenditure Blue Book, 1960, will assist him. I regret that figures for 1960 are not yet available in this series.
Uganda
Textbooks are normally purchased through the Crown Agents except when unforeseen circumstances necessitated local purchases.
Tanganyika
Textbooks are purchased locally under contract for twelve months ending June. 1961.
Zanzibar
Textbooks are normally purchased through the Crown Agents except for books on Arabic and Religion which are bought locally. though sometimes Arabic books are purchased from the Middle East.
Northern Rhodesia
Textbooks are purchased through the Crown Agents and also from local booksellers.
Nyasaland
Textbooks are purchased through the Crown Agents except for local purchase of certain supplementary or individual orders urgently required and of small quantities of textbooks for replacement purposes.
Sierra Leone
Textbooks arc normally purchased through the Crown Agents.
Gambia
Textbooks are purchased through the Crown Agents
