§ Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is aware that some European maritime countries are outstripping Britain in the facilities provided by their Governments for extending the size and scientific equipment of their fishing vessels; and if he will state in detail his plans to enable the British fishing industry to meet this threat by building more, larger, and better equipped trawlers.
§ Mr. SoamesI know that a number of Governments help the building of fishing vessels on much the same lines as we do. As to our future plans I have nothing yet to add to the reply which I gave to the hon. and learned Member on 26th January, and the statements made by the Secretary of State for Scotland and myself on the Second Reading of the White Fish and Herring Industries Bill.
