HC Deb 21 February 1961 vol 635 cc46-7W
Mr. Spriggs

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance how many applications were made during twelve months up to the last convenient date for each category of National Insurance benefit; and how many of those applications were rejected because of the claimant's inadequate contribution record.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

The approximate numbers of applications received in 1960(a) were as follows:

Unemployment benefit 2,447,000
Sickness benefit 8,320,000
Maternity benefit 934,000
Widows' benefit 100,000
Death grant 322,000
Retirement pensions 475,000(b)

(a) For benefits other than unemployment benefit, figures are for the 53 weeks to 3rd January, 1961.

(b) Estimated.

Of the claims for unemployment benefit, about 86,000 were rejected because the claimant's contribution record was inadequate. Corresponding information is not available for other benefits.
