HC Deb 20 February 1961 vol 635 cc8-9W
59. Mrs. McLaughlin

asked the Minister of Aviation, following his visit to Belfast, whether he is fully satisfied that the firm of Short Brothers and Harland is receiving sufficient Government financial assistance towards its research and development programme; and if he will make a statement.

62. Mr. McMaster

asked the Minister of Aviation, if, following his visit to Short Brothers and Harland in Northern Ireland, he is satisfied with the progress and expansion of research and development being carried on there; and if he will make a statement.

65. Mr. Stratton-Mills

asked the Minister of Aviation whether he will make a statement on his recent visit to Short Brothers and Harland.

Mr. Thorneycroft

I am satisfied with the progress of the research and development work which the company is undertaking on behalf of my Department. The quality of the work reflects favourably on the company. The future of the company's research and development programme, as well as its production programme, must depend in large measure upon its success in the export market. We shall, of course, give the company all the help we can.

60. Mrs. McLaughlin

asked the Minister of Aviation if he is yet in a position to announce the new permanent chairman for Short Brothers and Harland.

Mr. Thorneycroft

I hope to make an announcement shortly.
