HC Deb 20 February 1961 vol 635 c19W
Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Defence if he will state the gross amount spent on defence in the last ten years, and the proportions in this period devoted to nuclear weapons and forces and to conventional weapons and forces.

Mr. Watkinson

The total amount that will have been spent on defence in the ten years from 1st April, 1951, to 31st March, 1961, is estimated to be £14,2385 million. It is not possible to provide the analysis of this figure for which the hon. Member asks because many weapons and forces can be used in both nuclear and conventional roles.
