HC Deb 17 February 1961 vol 634 cc175-6W
Mr. C. Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what educational opportunities exist for children between the ages of 11 and 18 in St. Helena.

Mr. Iain Macleod:

Education is compulsory for children up to the age of 15. Children reaching the required standard at the age of 11 are admitted to a selective secondary school at which they may take a course leading to the Royal Society of Arts General Certificate Examination. Continuation courses are run in academic subjects for the examination of the Union of Educational Institutions and in practical subjects. Technical training is given to apprentices in the Public Works and Agricultural and Forestry Departments and includes a Youth Training Scheme for boys interested in farming.
