§ 89. Mr. McKayasked the Minister of Education how many Church of England grammar schools and how many Roman Catholic grammar schools there are in England where school fees are being enforced in accordance with his Department's national scale; how many such schools there are where no fees are charged; what was the total amount charged to the parents of such children in the Northumberland county for the latest year in which accounts have been completed; and how much this cost would be per £1 of rateable value if no fees were charged.
§ Sir D. Eccles:The only schools whose arrangements for charging fees require my approval are direct grant schools, of which 55 are Roman Catholic Grammar Schools and 23 Church of England by trust. There are 49 Roman Catholic and 36 Church of England grammar schools maintained by local education authorities, where no fees are charged. The accounts for the direct grant schools do not show where the parents live, and in consequence I cannot answer the third and fourth part of the question. The four denominational direct grant schools in Newcastle, two Church of England and two Roman Catholic, received about £26,000 in fees from parents in 1959–60.
