asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many working wives are paying Surtax on the whole of their incomes; and what yield in taxation this produces.

Sir E. Boyle:

On the assumption that a wife's earnings are regarded as the top slice of the joint income, there are about 90,000 cases, yielding £4 million Surtax, where the whole of the wife's earnings attracts Surtax liability.
