HC Deb 09 February 1961 vol 634 cc96-7W
113. Mr. Swingler

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he has considered the letter from the Newcastle-under-Lyme Rural District Council, sent to him by the hon. Member for New-castle-under-Lyme, about the need to introduce light industry into certain areas of North Staffordshire; and what action he proposes to take.

Mr. Maudling:

As I explained to the hon. Member in the letter sent to him yesterday. I do not consider that I should be justified in using my powers under the Local Employment Act to steer new industrial development into North Staffordshire, in view of the much greater need of areas of high unemployment.
