§ Sir M. Stoddart-Scottasked the Minister of Health if he is satisfied with the number of midwives now in the National Health Service and the number of women now being trained in midwifery; and what further steps he is taking to attract more women to this service.
§ Mr. Powell:No. The number of mid-wives in the National Health Service continues to increase, but there are shortages in some areas. The number in training would be adequate if wastage were reduced. I have recently sent another memorandum to hospital authorities suggesting measures to improve the position, and calling for reports on action taken. I am sending a copy to my hon. Friend.
