HC Deb 02 February 1961 vol 633 cc143-4W
Mr. Gower

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many new jobs have been created in the United Kingdom by the completion of new factories and extensions during each of the last three years; how many have been created since the passing of the Local Employment Act; and how many new jobs are in prospect during 1961.

Mr. Maudling

New factories and extensions known to be completed in 1958, 1959 and 1960 had employment estimated by the firms concerned of 71,635, 48,323 and 48,111, respectively. Comparable figures for the period since the passing of the Local Employment Act are not yet available. It is estimated that 138,275 persons will be employed by schemes now known to be under construction. Some of these will be completed in 1961.

Statistics are not available for the United Kingdom as a whole. These figures relate to Great Britain.
