HC Deb 02 February 1961 vol 633 cc158-9W
105 and 106. Mr. Morris

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) what were the final accounts for the financial year 1959–60 of all the farming grants, subsidies and deficiency payments paid to farmers in Wales and Monmouthshire, including payments in respect of eggs, fatstock, cereals, and potatoes;

(2) if he will make available an estimate of the proportion of the last total agricultural vote which went to farmers in Wales and Monmouthshire.

Mr. Vane

I regret that I cannot give precise figures for every item requested. It is not therefore possible to make a reliable estimate of the proportion of the total agricultural support going to farmers in Wales and Monmouthshire.

Farming Grants and Subsidies £
Fertiliser Subsidy 1,379,000
Lime Subsidy (including spreading contribution) 840,000
Ploughing Grants 901,000

Milk (Gallonage) Bonus 247,000
Livestock Premiums (Bulls) 7,000
Calf Subsidy 1,730,000
Hill Cow Subsidy 756,000
Silo Subsidy 243,000
Farm Improvement Grant 389,000
Small Farmer Scheme 195,000
Small Farmer Supplementary Scheme 10,000
Rabbit Clearance Societies 9,000
Scrub Clearance Grants 4,000
Fox Bonus Contributions 2,000
Cartridge Rebates 1,000
Bracken Eradication Scheme 1,000
Deficiency Payments
Cereals 696,000
Fatstock (estimated payment in respect of Welsh markets and deadweight centres) 3,451,000
NOTE: I regret that it is not practicable, however, to supply separate figures of all the Deficiency Payments showing the Welsh share of the cost for many of the commodities with a price guarantee. For some commodities the guarantee is to a Marketing Board on an England and Wales or Great Britain basis, while in other instances, such as Fatstock, the figures available could indicate no more than the throughput of Welsh markets and deadweight centres.
