HC Deb 21 December 1961 vol 651 c198W
Mr. Hornby

asked the Secretary for Technical Co-operation what further progress has been made with the scheme to assist the development of public library systems in the Commonwealth.

Mr. Vosper

In addition to the grants announced on 17th April, a grant of £27,000 is being made by the British Council in 1961–62 towards the cost of building a new central library at Ibadan, the capital of Western Nigeria. The Western Nigerian Government, who are contributing £18,000 towards the cost of the building and its equipment and staffing, intend the new library to become the headquarters of a library board serving the whole of the Western Region. It will contain lending, reference and children's libraries, together with accommodation for library extension work.
