§ 14. Sir J. Lucasasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if, in the negotiations for entry into the Common Market, the question of the quarantine arrangements for cattle, dogs, and other animals has been or will be discussed; and if, in safeguarding British farming interests, he will insist on the United Kingdom being in a position to continue present precautions against foot-and-mouth disease and rabies.
§ Mr. SoamesThis question has not yet been discussed in the negotiations. The right of member countries to impose restrictions necessary for safeguarding human or animal life or health is fully recognised in the Treaty of Rome, and we attach great importance to this.
