HC Deb 05 December 1961 vol 650 c139W
47. Mr. P. Noel-Baker

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what research has been undertaken by or on behalf of the Alkali Inspectorate into the measures necessary to prevent the emission of obnoxious fumes from electricity power stations.

Mr. Rippon

The obnoxious element in the fumes consists of sulphur oxides, the elimination of which is impracticable in the present state of knowledge. The Chief Alkali Inspector is at present concentrating on disposal of waste gases at high level. He is also closely associated with current research into ammonia scrubbing and dry processes for sulphur removal.
