§ Mr. Wallasked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what steps are being taken by the Basutoland administration to implement the modernisation of the system of land tenure.
§ Mr. SandysAlteration of the system of land tenure in Basutoland is a matter in which the initiative lies with the Basuto themselves. A Private Member's Motion to the effect that the land tenure system should be revised has been accepted by the Basutoland National Council. The Administration will give all the assistance they can to the Basuto in making changes, but as a first step it is thought that a fresh study of the problem will be required, and the best way of undertaking this is now being examined.
