HC Deb 04 August 1961 vol 645 cc254-5W
Mr. Godman Irvine

asked the Lord Privy Seal what representations were made to the Government of Brazil, during the negotiations which have led to £2,500,000 being made available to that Government, about repayment of bonds of public utility companies, such as Port of Para, taken over by the Government of Brazil.

Mr. P. Thomas

The question of United Kingdom claims which arose in connection with public undertakings taken over by the Brazilian Government was raised with the Brazilian delegation in the course of the recent negotiations which resulted in the granting of a loan of £2.5 million by Her Majesty's Government to the Brazilian Government, and it is expected that discussions on these claims will be opened in Rio de Janeiro shortly. As regards the Port of Para, since a substantial part of the bonds is held in France, the claim in respect of these bonds is being pursued by the French Bondholders' Association.
