§ 36. Dame Irene Wardasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give an assurance that any rise in the cost of living caused by measures to protect sterling will be met by Government action where practical in respect of those living on small fixed incomes.
§ Mr. BarberIt is not possible to insulate any section of the community from the effects of the measures which have had to be taken to meet our pressing economic difficulties. In the longer run, however, the steps taken by the Government to bring the growth of incomes into relation with the growth of productivity offer the best hope of safeguarding the position of people living on small fixed incomes.
