§ Sir B. Jannerasked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that serious accidents, some fatal, have been caused in many parts of the country owing to dogs not on leads straying across roads in the paths of vehicles; and what steps he proposes to take to make the law more effective for the prevention of such incidents.
§ Mr. MarplesI am concerned about the number of road accidents caused by dogs. Local authorities have powers, under Section 220 of the Road Traffic Act, 1960, to make orders designating the roads in their area on which dogs must be kept on a lead. I have confirmed 198 such orders. I am pleased so many local authorities are making use of these powers; I hope more will do so.
