HC Deb 01 August 1961 vol 645 c162W
92. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether he will make proposals that British troops should be withdrawn from Kuwait and be replaced by forces supplied by the Arab League, provided the independence of Kuwait is guaranteed.

Mr. Godber

The Arab League Council has passed a resolution under which Kuwait would request the withdrawal of British forces as soon as possible, and the Arab States would provide practical assistance to preserve Kuwaiti independence. Her Majesty's Government are following with interest the action taken to ensure that Arab forces are made available to safeguard Kuwait, and they have repeatedly stated that British forces will be withdrawn as soon as the Ruler of Kuwait is satisfied that the threat to his country is over.
