HC Deb 26 April 1961 vol 639 c48W
69. Mr. de Freitas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will make a statement on the recent instances of disobedience in Lincoln prison.

Mr. R. A. Butler

On 18th April six prisoners sat down during exercise. All got up when ordered to do so, except one who was punished by the Governor. Next day one prisoner sat down on exercise and four leant against a wall. All five refused to resume exercise and were punished by the Visiting Committee. No rational explanation of this behaviour has been found. The prison has been quiet since.
