§ Mr. Leaveyasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the totals of weekly wages and salaries paid in the United Kingdom on which he has made his calculations in relation to the yield of the proposed payroll tax; and what 20W the proposed 4s. would be, expressed as a percentage of all those weekly wages and salaries.
§ Mr. Selwyn LloydThe estimated yield of the proposed surcharge is related to the numbers of insured persons in respect of whom it might be payable, and is not related to totals of weekly wages and salaries. As I explained in my Budget Statement, at the maximum rate of 4s. per week the surcharge would withdraw from the economy about £200 million in a full year. The total of wages and salaries in 1960 is estimated at £13,570 million.
