HC Deb 25 April 1961 vol 639 c31W
Mr. Wolrige-Gordon

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what progress is being made in reorganising secondary education in sparsely-populated areas by reducing the number of small secondary departments.

Mr. Maclay

Eleven such departments were discontinued between 1956 and 1959, and 10 since the beginning of 1960. A further 11 will be discontinued in the near future and I have agreed in principle that another 16 may be discontinued when proposals for alternative arrangements can be worked out and submitted for my approval.
