HC Deb 19 April 1961 vol 638 cc98-9W
Sir R. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many Alsatians were bought in Great Britain for police work by the Metropolitan Police in 1960, and at what average cost per Alsatian; and if he will give similar figures for purchases so made of dogs of other breeds.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Ten, at an average cost of £15 5s. In addition, one Labrador was purchased for £15 15s.

Sir R. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many Alsatians ware imported by the Metropolitan Police in 1960, and from what countries; what was the average cost for purchase and transport; and what has been the cost of maintaining each 'imported Alsatian in quarantine for the statutory six months' period.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Ten, from Germany. The average cost of purchase and transport was £85. No precise calculation of the cost of maintaining these dogs in quarantine can be made; but one police constable was wholly employed in looking after them, and expenditure on food and veterinary fees amounted to an average of about £47 a dog for the six months' period.
