Mr. C. Johnson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what were the total number of staff employed by the Civil Service, both industrial and non-industrial, in 1937–38, 1949–50, 1957–58, and 1960–61; what were the total costs of superannuation benefits, including those under the Pensions (Increase) Acts and schemes for widows and their dependents, in the same years; and what is his estimate of the emerging costs in 1970 and 1990.

The emerging costs in 1970 and 1990, based on current salary levels, are estimated at about £90 million and £125 million, respectively.
