HC Deb 13 April 1961 vol 638 c42W
34. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Education if he will give the total amount of contributions received by the teachers superannuation account during the years 1958–59, and 1959–60, respectively, and the expenditure on pensons and repayment of contributions during those years; and whether he will make a statement on these accounts.

Sir D. Eccles

The total amount of contributions received from teachers and employers under the Teachers Superannuation Acts was £31.4 million in 1958–59 and £34.4 million in 1959–60. Expenditure on pensons for teachers and repayments of contributions amounted to £27.1 million in 1958–59 and £29.8 million in 1959–60. The state of the account has to be judged by its ability to meet future commitments as assessed by an actuarial valuation.

33. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Education if he will give the number of teachers who died in service leaving dependants in each year from 1950 to 1960, respectively; and whether he will make a statement about his Department's contribution for the maintenance of the dependants concerned.

Sir D. Eccles

My records do not show how many teachers who died in service left dependants, but the following is the number of teachers in respect of whom death gratuities were paid or contributions returned to legal personal representatives in the years 1950 to 1960.
