asked the Minister of Education the numbers of classes in primary and secondary schools of over 30, and over 40, pupils, respectively, in January, 1960; and how these figures compare with those for the previous two years.

The following table gives details for maintained primary and secondary schools (other than nursery and special schools):

I shall shortly be asking all local education authorities to submit proposals for inclusion in the 1962–63 programme. Until I receive these proposals I cannot say what allocation will be given to any individual authority.
