§ 58. Mr. G. M. Thomsonasked the Minister of Labour haw many newspaper workers are at present unemployed in the London area; and what stops he is taking to find them alternative newspaper employment.
§ Mr. HareNo separate figures are kept for newspaper workers. At the latest count on 10th October there were in the Greater London area 171 workers registered as unemployed in printing and publishing of newspapers and periodicals. Engagements of workers in the newspaper industry are normally arranged direct between employers and trade unions, and employers seldom notify their vacancies to employment exchanges. Special arrangements have, however been made to give information to those concerned about the facilities provided by my Department and my local offices will, give all possible help to those workers seeking other employment.
