HL Deb 25 October 1960 vol 225 c1086WA
LORD AMPTHILL

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is not a fact that Tropospheric Forward Scatter Wireless Stations, such as it is proposed to allow the United States Air Force to install on private land at Ringstead Bay, Dorset, will be out of date in less than two years, having regard to the successful tests by the United States of America in "bouncing" radio waves off satellites in outer space.

LORD CARRINGTON

No, my Lords. I am advised that the United States Air Force authorities see no early prospects of being able to rely entirely on orbiting satellites for secure and economical communications. They expect to need the proposed station at Ringstead Bay for a long time to come.

House adjourned at twenty-eight minutes before eight o'clock.
