asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that, taking the internal purchasing value of the £ sterling as 20s. in October, 1951, it had declined to 18s. 8d. in October, 1952 and to 16s. 4d. in October, 1956; and what was the comparable figure for October, 1960.

Yes, on the basis of the retail price index. The comparable figure for October, 1960, is 15s. 1d.

Mr. Mulley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the approximate purchasing power in September, 1951, and September, 1960, of the £ sterling as at September, 1946.

14s. 8d. and 12s. respectively.
