HL Deb 22 November 1960 vol 226 c799WA
LORD MANCROFT

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether recent events do not suggest that the time has come for a tightening of the law in respect of the sale, use, transfer and licensing of firearms, even at the risk of annoyance to bona-fide users.

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

Under the existing law, with a few well-defined exceptions, a person may possess a firearm other than a shotgun or air weapon only if he holds a firearm certificate issued by the police. This control, and the controls on sale and transfer, are very strictly applied. A review is being held of the law relating to shotguns and air weapons.
