HC Deb 22 November 1960 vol 630 c94W
Mr. Spriggs

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs if he will now take steps to ease the cost of house purchase for owner occupation.

Mr. H. Brooke

I take it the hon. Member is referring to the rates of interest charged by building societies, as the Government have already abolished the Stamp Duty on houses costing £3,500 or less.

Societies can only lend what they can borrow, and it is the terms they must offer to attract savings which govern the terms on which they can lend.
