HC Deb 14 November 1960 vol 630 c13W
Mr. Warbey

asked the Minister of Defence what is the explosive force of the warheads of the Polaris missile in terms of the bomb dropped at Hiroshima or of its trinitrotoluol equivalent.

Mr. Watkinson

It would not be in the public interest to state the precise power of the Polaris warhead.

Mr. Warbey

asked the Minister of Defence whether, in the agreement concerning the establishment of a Polaris submarine base in Holy Loch, any limitation has been placed on the number of Polaris missiles with nuclear warheads which may be held at any one time on the supply tender "Proteus".

Mr. Watkinson

No. I do not think that such a provision is either necessary or desirable

Mr. Warbey

asked the Minister of Defence what information he has received from the United States Government regarding the means of transportation to be used for the delivery of Polaris missiles and nuclear warheads to the supply tender "Proteus", stationed in Holy Loch.

Mr. Watkinson

Any replenishment of the missile stocks would be carried out by sea. It is not the practice to confirm or deny the presence of warheads at any particular site
