HC Deb 14 November 1960 vol 630 c11W
64. Dr. A. Thompson

asked the Minister of Education, as representing the Minister for Science, whether he will consult with the Minister of Transport to devise methods to reduce the pollution of the air by exhaust and other fumes from vehicles of all types.

Mr. K. Thompson

The Warren Spring Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has already been in consultation with the Ministry of Transport and also the Motor Industry Research Association on methods of reducing pollution from internal combustion engines. The emission of smoke from diesel engines can be effectively eliminated by good maintenance and correct operation. The possibility of reducing the emission of carbon monoxide from petrol engines is under consideration.
