HC Deb 09 November 1960 vol 629 cc50-1W
52. Mr. Biggs - Davison

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will make a statement about the proposed Victoria line and other measures to meet the increased overcrowding of the Underground at rush hour, revealed by the figures recently issued by London Transport in their census of passengers and vehicles entering the West End and City of London, a copy of which has been sent to him by the hon. Member for Chigwell.

Mr. Marples

Orders recently placed by London Transport for the new "silver" passenger stock bring the total number of underground cars now ordered, or in course of delivery, to nearly 1,700 and to a total value of more than £30 million. With their greater carrying capacity they will provide a marked improvement in travelling conditions on the Central, Piccadilly and Metropolitan Lines. The campaign for the staggering of office hours continues, and I hope that it will be carried much further. I am not in a position to make a statement about the proposed Victoria Line at the moment.
