§ LORD BOSSOMasked Her Majesty's Government whether they have, either officially or unofficially, obtained information as to the procedure by which certain trunk roads built recently to enter New York have been financed entirely by private enterprise, and the cost of which, it is claimed, is being repaid by tolls at about four times the speed anticipated when the original financial calculations were made; and, if they have such information, whether there is any reason why such a procedure should not be tried in Great Britain.
§ THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT (LORD CHESHAM)My right honourable friend the Minister of Transport knows in general about the toll roads leading into New York City. As I informed your Lordships' House on October 25, the question of tolls on motorways is still under examination, but no decision has yet been reached about tolls on those motorway projects which are still in an early state of preparation. The experience gained in the United States of America and in other countries which have adopted toll roads will be taken fully into account in this review, but it is too early to say whether the procedure followed in New York would be appropriate to conditions in this country.
