§ Mr. Owenasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what replies he has received from local authorities in the County of Northumberland to his circular concerning the clearing or the improvement of colliery slag heaps; what degree of Government help is available to local authorities for this purpose; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Sir K. JosephNorthumberland County Council has informed my right hon. Friend of seven schemes agreed with the National Coal Board for improving the appearance of spoil heaps, and Ashington Urban District Council reports an agreement with the Board for the progressive planting of trees. Exchequer assistance is available where the spoil heap is in a development district or in a national park or area of outstanding natural beauty.
