HC Deb 04 May 1960 vol 622 c83W
Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can now state what were the findings of Dr. Evans, physicist of the Ministry of Supply, on the radioactive effects of operations at the United States base at Chaguaramas in Trinidad.

Mr. Iain Macleod

A copy of the Report, which has been published in Trinidad, is being placed in the Library. Briefly, Mr. Evans' conclusions were that no radiation hazard exists to the population of Trinidad; that on-site precautions are more than adequate; and that precautions against entry by aircraft into hazardous zones are effective.

In his report, Mr. Evans stated that Morne Pierre was just within the hazard zone and could be irradiated, although in view of the difficult terrain and the heavy jungle even this region must be considered safe. The U.S. authorities subsequently agreed to modify the equipment so that Morne Pierre could not be irradiated.
