HC Deb 04 May 1960 vol 622 c85W
Mr. Cleaver

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the amount of the United States of America and other foreign capital invested in the United Kingdom and overseas territories for which he is responsible, respectively.

Mr. Barber

I regret that this information is not available in respect of all foreign investment. United States figures based on a census of investment abroad indicate that United States direct private investment (that is, exclusive of portfolio investment) in the United Kingdom amounted to about£735 million at the end of 1958. Foreign investment in the Colonies is mainly from the United States. At the end of 1955, according to United States sources, United States direct private investment in the Colonies was rather more than£150 million. The figure has certainly increased since then.
