HL Deb 03 May 1960 vol 223 c292WA
LORD RUSSELL OF LIVERPOOL

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What were the number of accidents during 1959, or any other year for which statistics are available, in which learner drivers were involved, and how many of these accidents took place while the drivers were being instructed by a representative of a recognised school of motoring.

LORD CHESHAM

Information is not available for the whole of 1959 or earlier years. A sample of analysis for November, 1959, showed that of 9,082 drivers of motor vehicles involved in fatal and serious accidents 663 were learners. Corresponding figures for January and February, 1960 were 7,146 and 6,569 drivers of whom 386 and 389 respectively were learners. Figures are now available monthly and are published in the road accident tables. It is not known how many of these learners were being instructed by a representative of a recognised school of motoring when the accidents occurred. In the three months 82 per cent. of the learners involved were riding two-wheeled vehicles and would probably not be accompanied.

House adjourned at nine minutes past six o'clock.
